'Style Is Eternal'

Everyone has their icons. Icon's are someone that inspires us, influences what we do, and therefore can influence Fashion. This post sprung to mind with upcoming V&A exhibition on Style Icon Grace Kelly; an example who showed style in a sophisticated, simple and seductive image, I myself will be booking tickets ;). Grace Kelly had the epitome of fashion, she just seemed to make things work with the help her status, therefore became a 'Style icon'.

Icon's are reflected through time, maybe that is why we have the fascination in vintage style; because of the want to be someone from the past such as Audrey Hepburn or in this case Grace Kelly, or just that 'go-with-the-flow Hippie' from the 70's. Though by no means, should we be stuck in an era, even retail shops pick up the vintage look, as we have all seen with the pearl and corsages and magazine editorials; but of course with a twist, for example the different cuts and patterns. Though personally I feel American Apparel take on the look very well, the shapes and cuts of some clothes are quite vintage, though with the use of different fabrics, its a whole modern look, such as the ever so funky Metallic Spandex.

A new Fashion decade

Cocktail dresses have been in for at least a decade, flirtatious and fun, and it was taken to a whole new level last year with the bodycon. The Fashion cycle goes round and round, and the maxi is off to a new start yet again. Everything maxi, from skirts to blazers. Just Remember when it was a 'mumsy' look to where long skirts a few years ago?....This season it's hit the shops, and a few catwalks too for RTW A/W 10, such as Peter Som, with beautiful colours and prints used, and textures to warm up the prints; so it's not just another summer trend.

I myself am very excited with the maxi. Others maybe not so, though just thing how much more you can do with more fabric, a mesh maxi skirt, would keep a flirty and sexy look, as seen with the cocktail dress.

A change is always nice.

Thorbjorn Uldam

Antwerp Academy on the rise with new head of Fashion, it is sure to be a success In June and Graduate Fashion Week. Connie Lim

Fashion Designer and illustrator; Connie Lim in on the rise. She did her own drawing of the Alexander McQueen A/W10 collections. Her drawings are absolutely beautiful, with amazing detail, yet with her own style. The drawings and designs, are dark and mysterious, quite gothic, and someways can depict the the Lolita style in some mannours. Though also her drawings have a sense of movement and seem to remind me of superheroes? Which almost goes with the theme of her playing card drawings, which she does in most images; combining them all together as one. Maybe she's an Art superhero in the making.

Vivienne Westwood Red Label A/W 10 RTW

Everyone has heard of the Vivienne Westwood, and well no one does not like her designs, even wags! Well yet again Westwood has pleased, with the use of cultural tartans, plaid, and big shoulders, puff sleeves, and the aesthetics of the materials were quite rough, and hard; a use of natural fibres( kind of reminded me of those 'hippy' clothes you get in cornwall). The collection was based on there being about 1 billion people left on the Earth in 2100, due to global warming; and with the legacy of Westwood she is able to give out this message, but by no means was the collection less of a 'WOW', always out there to surprise and a work of Art.

Sleep and consciousness- one level

The A/W10 collection by 'beyond the valley' created to reflect "sensory experiences between sleep and consciousness, facing the darkness of dreams and subconscious imagination". The shop in london is run by central Saint Martin's graduates. The stock is picked out of the best of the best, all to convey a message. It is known as a 'cult' shop, as of its selective stock, all sharing geometric design, with the contrasting aspects of elegance, and angel like aspects (involving fabrics such as silk). To create an effect to trigger the imagination, and could portray the over thinking of life. The prints in the collection are designed by Kristjana S. Williams herself, though the shop is also run with Kate Bonhôte. The shop includes a selection of clothing by other designers too, relevant to the collection.

Reykjavik Fashion Festival

Reykjavik Fashion Festival ended on the 23rd of March, and there were a few designers I just had to

search up. The one that stood out to the press was Mundi, such as to 'dazed and confused', though not

my favourite (still amazing of course). The Festival was part of 'Design March' in Iceland, which exhibitsall types of art, from architecture to Fashion. My favourites included: Hildur Yeoman, Kalda, Sonja Bent, though Mundi too as his work was extremely technical, and unique, though the aesthetics of Kalda
were to my preference.

Pop into the Pop-Up

For a short time only in Bicester Village a Pop-Up store will appear, there from the 29th March -7th May, with RTW clothing from upcoming new British designers. In the Village there are the likes of PPQ, Emma Cook and House of Holland! The idea came from he British Fashion council, to help raise awareness of these ever so talented avant- garde designers. The designers included will be the likes of Hannah Marshall, Goat and Louise Gray ( whom I love).

Modern Missoni

Missoni's AW10 collection, was still based on the whole 'put together' look, from the historic Italian Fashion House. The AW10 collection somewhat differed in someways, with cultural references to Africa and Scotland, for example tartan prints (always seem to be a trend in AW), along with crochet tops, and knits. Though this was not the biggest change. Daughter of Angela Missoni; Margherita Maccapani Missoni, designed accessories for the collection. Elegance always involved though with a futuristic look, for example round sunglasses. The taste of her designs, worked well with Missoni designs, and complimented them, and showed off the texture for AW10, all this to bring something new to the palette.
